By now, a majority of people know that breast cancer is a huge issue that affects almost every person, whether it is a family member, close friend, or a friend of a friend. But did you know that in 2007 an estimated 240,510 people were diagnosed with this life threatening disease just in the United States alone?

My name is Alyson Simonsen. I’m a college student at Auburn University, and have found out first hand the statistics are true. Each and every one of us, myself included, have indeed been touched directly or indirectly by this disease. There’s only one way to win the battle over breast cancer and that’s through intensive research efforts. Those efforts require funding.While this problem is on a rise, researchers are trying to develop ways to fight back.

Susan G. Komen is a non-profit organization, which funds breast cancer research. Every advancement in breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention in the last 25 years has been touched by a Komen for the Cure grant. One way of raising funds for the Susan G Komen organization is known as the Breast Cancer 3Day. This is a walk in which hundreds of women and men trek 60 miles over the course of 3 days. Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds of this event go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The remaining fifteen percent of net funds goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. This fund provides ongoing support to breast cancer initiatives so that strides made today can continue to propel us toward our goal.

Last year I had the opportunity to support my mother and be part of her Crew as she walked This year I have joined her at her side and am now walking with her. Please support me as I embark on this incredible journey in the fight against breast cancer. Thank you.
